Our Shooting Locales

Old Mission Lighthouse - © Moose Peterson

Why did we select these locales? That’s a very valid and important question because it’s what makes DLWS so unique. It’s what you should consider when picking the right locale for YOU!
DLWS is the only traveling digital workshop of its kind, taking a complete digital lab on the road to maximize shooting. This is so we can offer so many unique and special North American landscapes to inspire you, the participant! The locales we select are based on Moose’s own travels through North America, locations that offer the best teaching opportunities. Yes, locales are selected based on having the widest photographic inspirations and challenges providing the best learning opportunities. While we get up early enough to capture the sunrise, the sunrise itself is quite often not our subject for the morning. Each shoot of the three days of shooting are planned out to maximize what it is DLWS is trying to teach. Each shoot providing delight and material for the next lesson. Devilish by design, effective in practice.

Are you required to accompany the instructors at each shoot? Nope, not at all. But you’re spending a bunch of hard earned time and cash to be at DLWS, why not make the most of your expenditure and attach yourself to the hip of an instructor. Because at DLWS, you are encouraged to do just that! If you see something else you want to photograph, you are more then welcome to follow your heart. Some do and come back with killer images, but that’s not the goal of DLWS. That probably sounds kinda strange, a photographic workshop not out to capture killer images. Our goal is to provide you with a wide variety of photographic tools so when you’re out on your own shooting after DLWS, you’ll have all the tools to bring back your passion to share with others in the form of THE photograph. We think we can accomplish this best by shooting with you which is why we don’t send you out on your own. When you “tag along” with the instructors, you will learn a lot more then just where to set up your tripod. It’s at the shoots that so much of the teaching occurs, in real time and real life.

It seems really silly to us, the DLWS staff, for folks to pay so much money to join us, only to not join us when we’re shooting. We love folks who attach themselves to our hips and drive us nuts with questions. Really…these are our ideal students, those who ask question upon question like: “Can I look through your lens?” Why did you frame it that way?” “Will you look through my lens and make a suggestion?” “Why that lens?” “Why are you not using a polarizer?” We basically demand folks ask questions, that’s how we all learn more, and have one heck of a lot of fun.

Is the shooting schedule for the event determined prior to the event? Nope, that’s done days prior to the start of the event. The staff come to the locales early and spend it scouting old and new spots to take our cameras. We look for the best time for light, challenges we can teach from and excitement to get the creative juices flowing. When you check-in to DLWS, you will be handed a printed schedule. As the very last sentence indicates, the schedule will change bases on light. We won’t cancel for bad weather, but we do change shoot locales because of light. We do chase the light!

DLWS does not cancel events, we never have and never will. In fact, most events are filled 90-120 days prior to the event. You can count on us being there! This is especially true in 2007 where we have some of our favorites like Yosemite & Bryce and new adventures like Oregon Coast & Cape Cod.

Each event is $935 which covers instruction only.

Bar Harbor, ME - Sept 20-23, 2009 FULL

© Moose PetersonWe're heading back for our third DLWS event in Bar Harbor. You can say we LOVE it there (and we're not talking just food here). We're not shooting for fall color but just simple New England flavor, beautiful coast lines, remote ponds and great sunrises. We have a couple of new twists in store this time that I can't wait to spring on the group. We're expanding what we bring to the table, pushing our own photography as well as yours. Hope you can join us for one heck of a great time!

When: Sept 20-23, 2009
Where: Bar Harbor, ME
Host Hotel: Bar Harbor Regency

Great Lakes, MI - Oct 18-21, 2009 FULL

© Moose PetersonI am so pumped to be going back to MI! It's not because there is a resturant that gives me a free beer after kissing moose, but the great photography we didn't get to finish at our last DLWS at MI. This is a beautiful locale with so much character that it will test every skill behind the camera and computer to bring back the images still waiting to be explored. With water, fall color, forest, lakes and Americana, it's a fantastic locale for teaching. Hope you can join us!

When: Oct 18-21, 2009

Host Hotel: Park Place Hotel

New York City, NY - Nov 15-18, 2009 FULL

© Moose PetersonWe're quite excited to be able to finally offer what we affectionately call the Joe's New York Tour. Yeap, we're heading to the Big Apple to paint the town red. This is a special event in many ways, one is that on two days, we'll all bus into the city to shoot at such locales as Central Park and Canal Street. But being a McNally Tour, the special component of our days won't be revealed until we're there. Can't wait! One day we'll head up river to a couple special places Joe likes to shoot for another great experience. We have secured a special room rate of $169 and because of this along with bus logistics, all participants will be required to stay at the host hotel. The price for this event is $1045 with no NAPP discount. Being a veteran of a number of Joe McNally NYC tours, I can't wait to do it with new twists. Hope you can join us!

When: Nov 15-18, 2009
Where: New York City, NY
Host Hotel: Tarrytown DoubleTree

San Francisco, CA - Jan 10-13, 2010

© Moose PetersonThe staff are all excited to be going back to San Francisco, it's been a couple of years. It's a marvelous place to photographically explore Redwoods, history, beaches and of course, the Golden Gate. We're adding a special treat this time, a "landscape model" shoot. Joe will work his magic for a one of a kind shoot on the bay incorporating all that DLWS has to teach in one marvelous location with a model. It's going to be something! And to be real honest with you, this DLWS features some of the finest dinning. Come join us by the bay, it's a great town for photography.

When: Jan 10-13, 2010
Where: San Francisco, CA
Host Hotel: Corte Madera Inn

Santa Fe, NM - March 07-10, 2010

© Moose PetersonDLWS is heading to what seems like Joe's 2nd home for a great week of fun and killer photography. We have the SouthWest as our subject with vast landscapes and old spanish style architecture. As a special treat, we'll be shooting at the old, historic and infamous prison one morning and one evening. And you just never know what other special surprises we have in store. We're been planning this one for some time so we are really excited for to smack some chilies and see that romantic sunset. We're staying at the very romantic, pictursque Bishop's Lodge where we've secured a killer rate for our participants. We can easily see this becoming one of our favorite locales!

When: March 07-10, 2010
Where: Santa Fe, NM

Moab, UT- May 09-12, 2010

© Moose PetersonDLWS is heading back to where it all begin in 2003. Moab, UT holds a special place in our hearts and our hard drives. Arches, Canyonland and now Cisco are jsut some of the locales we will travel with our cameras on this event. We're based out of the gorgeous Red Cliffs Lodge which is an event in itself. Located on the Colorado River, you'll be tempted to just shoot from your porch. Sharon has secured a very special rate with extends after the event (with the limited space and rooms, you will have to register and receive the code to get the rate) so you can sleep, work images and recup before going back to the real world. Like all our events, this one will be full very quickly so don't hesitate!
